Early Art

Sifting through some boxes in my basement I came across this yellowed sheet of paper with a cartoon strip I created for my 7th grade school newspaper in Chelmsford, MA. Pretty sure it was 1973. I am relieved to see that my early work featured a hero doing good. The world might be ready for "SuperMoose" to return!

Oh, and nice use of the exclamation point. Actually, pretty abstract device for a 7th-grader :)

This was great fun to look at! It's fun to imagine you in seventh grade. A moose is definitely not the typical hero, it shows you always thought outside the box!

Keep digging through the basement, there may be untold treasures there.

Thanks for the feedback! It is fun when I look at kids' art and try to imagine where their marks might take them. I'm not sure if I would have guessed from my early art that I would have made a career out of it! Terry, I liked what you said about the moose not being a typical hero. That is a good place to start when thinking about a heroic character - choosing someone or something that folks would least expect. SuperClam. The Amazing Snail. PowerSloth.

Like everyone else, I really enjoyed seeing this piece of your early art. I think it's also great for kids to see that the art you created when you were a kid doesn't look exactly like the art you create now. Developing those skills, even for you, is a process... ever evolving. The important part is to act on the creative interest... and keep going, and going...

It reminds me that I should pick up my guitar and practice/play more often - because I'm not going to get any better at it by just looking at it sitting in the corner...
